Samantha with Suriya in Anjaan
The actress throws down the gauntlet to Hansika, Nayans, Amala & Lakshmi Menon, the reigning queens in Tamil cinema
Samantha Ruth Prabhu is miles ahead of the rest of the female stars in Tollywood by delivering multiple hits over the last three years with the latest being Manam.
The actress, who is now acting in three Tamil movies opposite top stars, is all set to hot up the competition among top heroines in Kollywood. But the moot question is whether Samantha can conquer Kollywood, which is currently dominated by Hansika Motwani, Nayanthara and Lakshmi Menon.
In what appears to be her second innings in Tamil, Samantha has two movies lined up for release in Tamil. The third one is expected to go on the floors soon. The first film is Anjaan, directed by hit film-maker N Lingusamy and she is cast opposite Suriya. The second movie is Kaththi in which she will romance Vijay on the big screen. Both movies have created a buzz with distributors keen on lapping up both movies. Distributors have high expectations from the two movies and if they do well at the box office, then Samantha could give the rest of the top actresses a run for their money.
In fact, Samantha acted in her first Tamil movie - Baana Kaathadi and second movie Moscowin Kavery way back in 2010 opposite lesser-known stars. Subsequently, she was seen in Telugu-Tamil bilingual projects, such as Eega and Neenthane En Ponvasantham.
However, her first movie opposite any A-list actor in Tollywood will be Anjaan and consequently, Samantha too is eagerly looking forward to its release.
Unlike Tollywood, there is intense competition among female stars in Kollywood. Though Hansika is at the top right now, Nayantara is a close second, and trade sources say she will soon displace Hansika from the top. Then, there are Amala Paul, Anushka Shetty, Kajal Agarwal, Trisha, and Nazriya Nazim, who have established their own markets. Well, Samantha has already shown that she has it in her to make it big in Kollywood by bagging three Tamil projects in 2014. But whether she will be able to overtake the existing top 5 in Kollywood will depend on the performance of the movies.
